"Dope beer for dope people". As Michigan’s 1st Black Owned brewery, Black Calder's craft will be Brewed for the Culture and provide a platform for innovation, art, culture, and inclusion. The client came to us with some great ideas already in mind and we were happy to bring it to life. This logo couldn't have happened without Michael, owner of Fifth Dimension Brewing (if you're near Fremont, OH and love home brews, check them out!). He was kind enough to transfer ownership of his unused Deimos Brewing Co Logo, elements from which this logo draws some inspiration. I can't wait to see what Black Calder becomes in the Grand Rapids community.

Black Calder Brewing Co. plans to be the first black-owned brewery in Michigan. As such, they wanted to pay homage to African culture and needed a logo that represented their drive, diversity, and of course, craft beer! What better way to represent this than with the African goddess of beer and harvest, Mbaba Mwana Waresa. The empty space bottom left is filled with pen-tool drawn hops and barley, the staples of beer and the goddess's gift to the South African people. An Easter egg hidden on the left side of her face is a tribute to the Calder sculpture, La Grande Vitesse, of Calder plaza in Grand Rapids.
